Farewell to Skype: What You Need to Know Before May 5, 2025

Writer: Tara GreyTara Grey
Goodbye to Skype

For many years, Skype has been a trusted way to stay in touch with family, friends, and even doctors and businesses. Whether you’ve used it for video calls with grandchildren, chatting with old friends, or connecting with loved ones across the world, Skype has played a big role in keeping people connected.

But now, change is coming (and we all love change, don’t we?). Microsoft has announced that Skype will officially shut down on May 5, 2025. After that date, the service will no longer work. If you currently use Skype, it’s important to prepare so you don’t lose touch with the people who matter most.

Why Is Skype Shutting Down?

Technology is always changing, and Microsoft has decided to focus on its newer communication tool, Microsoft Teams. While Skype was originally created for video and voice calls, Teams offers additional features like messaging, file sharing, and video meetings—all in one place. Microsoft believes Teams will be a better long-term solution for users.

What Should You Do Before May 5, 2025?

To ensure you can keep in touch with your loved ones, here are some important steps to take before Skype shuts down:

1. Save Important Chats and Contacts

If you have important messages, addresses, or other information saved in Skype, now is the time to save them. Microsoft offers a way to download your chat history before the service ends.

To do this:

  • Visit Skype’s data export page

  • Log in to your Skype account

  • Request your Conversations and Files history for download

  • Once you have the files, you can save it to your computer or print it if needed

2. Consider Other Communication Options

If you don’t want to use Microsoft Teams, there are other options for video calls and messaging:

  • Zoom – Popular for video calls, often used for family chats and doctor’s appointments.

  • WhatsApp – A free messaging and video call app, easy to use on a smartphone.

  • FaceTime – Great for Apple users (iPhone, iPad, Mac).

  • Facebook Messenger – Allows you to video chat with friends and family on Facebook.

  • Google Meet – Create and schedule video meetings right through your web browser.

  • Microsoft Teams - Collaborative video, chat and file sharing.

It’s a good idea to ask your family or friends what they use so you can stay connected.
