Don't Let Microsoft Updates Take Over Your Computer

I have been wanting to write a blog post about this topic for a while. Recently, my Windows 11 laptop performed an update to my computer, and I was able to snap photos of the process to demonstrate the issues I've seen with my clients.

I'm often called with frantic accounts of distress that clients' computers have been "changed" after Windows has installed an update. I hear things like "My internet is different than it was before...Now I can't find my files...The computer is asking me all these questions I don't know how to answer." I'm going to show you how NOT to have this happen.

After installing a Microsoft Windows update (depending on the update version), you may often encounter several initial questions or prompts that require attention and decisions on your part. The key here is "attention" and "reading thoroughly". Without going into the specifics of what each screen question actually means, I'll show you how to answer them properly, so you don't have issues afterwards. (For an explanation of these screens, Contact me).

When these updates are installed, you may see a screen pop up that says "Let's finish setting up your PC". There are two options at the bottom of the screen. Most people don't feel like taking the time to go through this series of questions, so they choose the first option: Remind me in 3 days. That is fine to choose, but you will be persistently asked these questions again. My recommendation is to get these questions over with. Click the Continue button.

On the next window, you can click Skip.

Skip Let's customize your experience

This next prompt is VERY important. Following my photos below, do NOT click "Use Microsoft recommended settings". Instead click "Don't update your settings" (image 1 below). Then click "Don't update settings" at the bottom (image 2 below).
